Miami
The constant sunshine and deep blue waterways of Miami play a large role in making it one of the most desirable places in the U.S. for boaters to live. Miami has it all, with endless areas to explore, incredible aquatic life, and plenty of marinas and boat launch points. But before taking to the Biscayne Bay or the Atlantic Ocean’s waters, there are some imperative things to know. Let’s break down some necessary details for boating in Miami, from the essential rules to the most exciting destinations.
Where to Go
Boaters in Miami are especially attracted to the stunning locales on Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Coast, where boaters can drop anchor and unwind in some gorgeous destinations.
The Nixon Beach Sandbar is a popular destination in Key Biscayne with crystal clear, calm waters and soft sand. It is often filled with locals on weekends and is a sought-after destination for families and young people alike.
The Miami Beach Architectural District has a luxurious marina to dock a boat and explore this delightful area, which features hundreds of immaculately-designed homes built in the early to mid-20th century, covered in pastel colors and neon lights.
Flagler Memorial Island, also known as Monument Island, is a large, uninhabited island off of South Beach named for the large monument at its center. This area is an excellent place for a picnic with friends and family and boasts terrific views of Miami Beach.
Dry Tortugas National Park is ideal for boaters looking for a longer journey, ideally a multi-day excursion. Dry Tortugas National Park is located off the Florida Keys and has magnificent, protected coral reefs with perfect snorkeling conditions. It is a perfect destination for experienced boaters who want to see the Keys.

Fishing and Marine Life
One of the best parts of exploring the Miami area by the water is witnessing the incredible aquatic life surrounding the city, which has made it a world-renowned destination for fishers. But, for those who do not enjoy fishing, Miami is enchanting to spot the incredible native aquatic creatures by boat.
For experienced anglers, the waters teem with exotic fish. Offshore fishers around Miami can expect to find mahi-mahi, swordfish, snapper, grouper, marlin, sailfish, and many more. There are plenty of fishing charters available, and, as mentioned below, a license is required for those who want to go out and fish on their own.
For those who just want to observe the marine wildlife, some amazing, large creatures dwell in the waters of Miami. Manatees are exceedingly common, although it is crucial to avoid hitting these friendly giants. Many dolphins inhabit the waters near the city, and those lucky enough may spy a pod of these majestic mammals. While it is rare, whales have also been spotted along the Miami coast.

Important Rules
Miami’s waters are filled with boats throughout the year, so getting out on the water isn’t too tricky. But there are several important rules to be aware of before setting sail. For starters, those who plan on using a boat powered by ten horsepower or more must pass a boating safety course and carry the earned certificate while on the water.
Boaters must never drive impaired by alcohol and must always follow speed limits, which differ by area. Manatee safety zones require moving slowly. A license is required for anyone who would like to fish, unless they do so from a chartered vessel.
