With the highest elevation of any wine region in the U.S., Colorado’s wine country distinguishes itself in a league of its own. This agricultural hub has dozens of wineries renowned for their alpine settings, offering a unique and unforgettable trip for wine enthusiasts. Before you pack your bags and head to the Rocky Mountain vineyards, let’s look at some crucial things to know about wine country in the Colorado mountains.

Where is Colorado Mountain Wine Country?

Typically, wine enthusiasts consider the region surrounding Palisade, a small community framed by cliffs and mountains, as the heart of Colorado’s wine country. While it is home to just under 2,600, this town packs an outsized punch when it comes to wine and agriculture. Palisade houses more than 30 local wineries, offering tasting rooms and tours to explore while savoring wine amid the spectacular backdrop of Mount Garfield and Grand Mesa.

Palisade is part of the Grand Valley Wine Region, an American Viticultural Area (AVA) along the western edges of the Rocky Mountains. As an up-and-coming wine region, this scenic place attracts visitors worldwide. Grand Valley’s unique and dry climate combined with water from the Colorado River has fostered an ideal environment for cultivating a variety of wine grapes. These varieties are used to create several of the region’s acclaimed wines, including merlot, cabernet sauvignon, riesling, chardonnay, and pinot noir.
