Nestled along South Carolina’s picturesque coastline, the Beaufort Water Festival is one of the Southeast’s most cherished maritime celebrations. The 69th Annual Beaufort Water Festival, themed “Blue Skies & Starry Nights,” will transform the historic waterfront into a vibrant showcase of Lowcountry culture from July 11-20. This ten-day celebration honors Beaufort’s deep connection to its waterways while offering visitors an authentic glimpse into the region’s distinctive coastal lifestyle.

The festival’s origins trace back to July 1956, when local visionary John Bigbee served as the inaugural president, with Gladys Thompson overseeing the visiting queens program. What began as a modest community gathering has evolved into a signature event that now attracts over 50,000 visitors annually. The festival was conceived as a way to celebrate Beaufort’s maritime heritage and the vital role water plays in the region’s identity. Throughout its nearly seven-decade history, the Water Festival has maintained its commitment to showcasing local traditions while expanding its offerings to appeal to contemporary audiences seeking authentic cultural experiences.

Modern Newport residents enjoy the unique privilege of living within walking distance of these cultural treasures while benefiting from a vibrant community that honors its past without being constrained by it. The city’s commitment to historic preservation ensures that new construction and renovations maintain the architectural integrity that defines Newport’s character, creating a cohesive visual landscape that enhances property values and lifestyle appeal.

What distinguishes the Beaufort Water Festival from other coastal celebrations is its remarkable blend of maritime activities, cultural performances, and community engagement. Unlike commercial festivals that have become increasingly common, the Beaufort Water Festival remains primarily volunteer-driven, with over 400 dedicated community members working year-round to orchestrate the event. This grassroots approach creates an authentic experience that reflects the genuine hospitality for which the Lowcountry is renowned. The festival’s setting in Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park, with its sweeping views of the Beaufort River and historic mansions, provides an unparalleled backdrop that captures the essence of refined coastal living.

This year, the Opening Ceremony on July 11 will feature a spectacular fireworks display over the Beaufort River, visible from numerous waterfront properties and vessels. The Commodore’s Ball, scheduled for Saturday, July 19, offers an elegant evening of fine dining and dancing at Waterfront Park, where attendees can mingle with local dignitaries and festival organizers in a sophisticated setting. Originally called the Water Festival Ball, this signature event has remained one of the festival’s most prestigious occasions for decades.

Water enthusiasts will appreciate the Blessing of the Fleet on Sunday, July 20, a time-honored tradition where decorated vessels parade along the Beaufort River to receive blessings for safe passage. The Air Show on July 19 will showcase precision aerobatics against Beaufort’s brilliant blue skies. Throughout the festival, the Arts & Crafts Market will feature curated works from regional artisans, offering unique Lowcountry-inspired pieces perfect for adorning coastal residences.

Most festival events are complimentary with the purchase of the official 2025 “Blue Skies & Starry Nights” T-shirt, which serves as general admission to concerts and activities. The Commodore’s Ball requires separate ticketing, with details to be announced closer to the event date. For those seeking additional information, the festival’s website at bftwaterfestival.com offers detailed schedules, ticket purchasing options, and accommodation recommendations.
