The Devonshire Estate in Bedford Corners was built in 1901 and has been expanded over time, most notably with a 33,000-square-foot car gallery. The Westchester County property is now on the market for $49.5 million.

The 26,000-square-foot main residence has eight bedrooms and retains many of its original details, including European antique fireplaces, oak paneling, and a grand staircase.

The estate was originally known as Uplands. Financier J. Borden Harriman and his wife, Florence Jaffray Harriman, built the country home around the turn of the century, and Florence later wrote about it in her 1923 memoir, From Pinafores to Politics. She recalled their life in the hills near Mount Kisco and credited Pat Morgan with building the house shortly after completing his Beaux-Arts education.

The Harrimans owned Uplands for 20 years and lived there for much of 16 of them. Florence Harriman later became a prominent social reformer and suffragist, and in 1937 President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed her U.S. minister to Norway. Descendants of the Vanderbilt family were among the estate’s later residents.

Today, the estate includes substantial additions to the original residence, most notably a climate-controlled car gallery in the East Wing. The gallery itself has epoxy flooring, fire suppression, and a compressed-air system. Bedrooms, bathrooms, lounges, laundry facilities, and staff space are on the upper levels.

Work is still underway in the West Wing. A two-story marble foyer and elevator are complete, while two additional levels remain unfinished, leaving their eventual use to the next owner.

Beyond the main house, the property includes a carriage house, caretaker’s cottage, barn with an apartment, and a separate apartment within the gated entrance and cloister, along with stone walls and equestrian facilities.

The Devonshire Estate is listed by Brian Sheerin of William Raveis Elite Concierge Services at more than twice the $21.5 million price it sold for in 2012, when the transaction set a Westchester County residential sales record.
