Vancouver doesn’t treat the water as scenery. It’s infrastructure, pastime, and a kind of shorthand for how the region lives—weekends set to tide charts, summer routes traced through the Gulf Islands, and a steady commerce of marinas, ferries, and working harbors. From January 14–18, that relationship comes into focus at the Vancouver International Boat Show, which returns this year with a notable shift in setting: the indoor show moves to the Vancouver Convention Centre West, while the on-water component continues at Granville Island. The event has long drawn a substantial regional audience—often cited at 30,000+ attendees—which tracks with its role as a midwinter marker for the season ahead.

With BC Place temporarily unavailable, the move places the show in a building that feels inherently aligned with what’s on display—waterfront glass, long sightlines, and a literal view of the environment these boats are built for. The Convention Centre West hosts the indoor exhibits, while Granville Island’s marina remains the place to step aboard larger vessels and see how space, finish, and layout translate when the boat is afloat rather than under convention hall lighting.

That split format is part of what makes the Vancouver show distinctive. Indoors, the emphasis tends to land on the ecosystem around boating—equipment, technology, service providers, and the kinds of design decisions that are easier to appreciate up close. On the docks, the conversation shifts from details to proportion and practicality, with walk-throughs that make clear how a boat will actually live, such as how people move through it and where gear gets stored.

If you’re planning a visit, the show’s hours are built around lingering rather than rushing. At the Vancouver Convention Centre West, it runs noon to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. At Granville Island, the floating show keeps shorter daily hours—generally noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday.

Moving between the two venues is designed to be simple. The show offers a free shuttle bus to connect the downtown and Granville Island portions, helping the day feel like one continuous experience rather than two separate trips. Tickets can be purchased at VancouverBoatShow.ca.
