Chicago’s history is one aspect that defines it as a premier American city. From its early days as an industrial hub to its legacy as the home of Al Capone and other notorious mobsters, few American cities can match Chicago’s unique history. One major component of Chicago’s history is its iconic music scene. Chicago has played a key role in developing genres such as blues, rock and roll, and hip hop, but the genre the city might be most famous for is jazz. Chicago’s legacy as a jazz capital is celebrated annually at the Hyde Park Jazz Festival.

The Hyde Park Jazz Festival showcases Chicago’s jazz talent. It is meant to support and develop the city’s jazz scene, particularly on the South Side. Compared to the long-standing jazz history in Chicago, this festival is a relatively recent addition, beginning in 2006. But the Hyde Park Jazz Festival has rapidly become one of Chicago’s most prominent and exciting musical events.

The Hyde Park Jazz Festival is unique because it is completely free. While a $10 donation is encouraged, the event’s purpose is to encourage everyone to celebrate an essential part of Chicago’s cultural heritage. Jazz made its way into Chicago in the early 20th century and became a pivotal form of expression for many of the different communities that call the city home. Honoring and developing that aspect of Chicago is incredibly important.

The Midway Plaisance is the primary location of the festival, with two different stages that will have performances running throughout. This is the ideal spot to unwind and watch the musical performances.
