Austin, TX
South by Southwest is scheduled for March 12–18, bringing a single, concentrated week of conference programming, film and TV screenings, and nightly music showcases into downtown Austin. SXSW EDU precedes the main festival, running March 9–12, with Thursday functioning as a handoff day that overlaps with the start of SXSW activity in the city.
This year’s structure is notably tighter than the multi-weekend sprawl many attendees associate with past editions. With the calendar compressed into seven days, the week reads more like a continuous program than a sequence of separate weekends, with sessions and screenings in the daytime, showcases at night, and a steady stream of official and unofficial events in between.
Music remains one of the most prominent aspects of the week. SXSW has announced over 300 showcasing artists for this year, with performances spread across a wide network of venues clustered around the downtown core. On the conference side, this year continues SXSW’s emphasis on technology, culture, and creative industries sharing the same footprint. Programming spans keynote-style talks, featured sessions, and smaller formats that tend to draw professionals across film, media, music, tech, and brand-side strategy. A reservation system for sessions, screenings, and showcases remains part of the attendee experience, shaping how people map their days.

Austin itself is inseparable from how SXSW functions. The festival’s downtown geography creates a walkable, decentralized circuit: convention-center sessions feeding into nearby theaters and hotels, and then out toward clubs and temporary venues after dark.
For visitors, the simplest way to approach SXSW is as two different experiences in one week: one day structured around daytime programming, and another built around the night schedule. With downtown as the default base, accommodations and transit planning matter as much as badge choices, particularly if you want to move between sessions, screenings, and showcases without treating the day as a series of long transfers.
