The Calgary International Film Festival runs from September 24 through October 4 with more than 200 feature films and shorts from Canada and around the world screening at five venues across Calgary. Now in its 27th year, Alberta’s largest film festival showcases films from major international festivals while maintaining a strong focus on Canadian and Alberta stories.

One of the biggest titles this year is James Gray’s Paper Tiger, starring Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson, and Miles Teller. The film arrives in Calgary for its Canadian premiere after premiering at Cannes and making its North American premiere at the New York Film Festival. Jesse Eisenberg’s The Debut, with Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti, will also make its Alberta premiere. Other selections that earned recognition earlier this year include Cristian Mungiu’s Fjord, which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, and Josephine, which won the U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize at Sundance.

David Ehrenreich’s documentary Relax, Open Your Eyes has a direct Calgary connection and is scheduled to make its world premiere at CIFF on September 25. The film follows a Calgary family working to establish a local cryonics facility as a husband’s health worsens, documenting the project over three years. An Alberta connection also carries through Closing Night. The festival closes October 4 with Cody Lightning’s Smudge the Blades, a coming-of-age sports comedy about an Indigenous U-18 hockey team. The Closing Night screening is followed by a celebration at The GRAND.

Individual tickets, ticket bundles, and festival passes are available through CIFF, with seating at screenings offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
