A 17,620-square-foot mansion in Riverdale occupies land once owned by Joseph and Rose Kennedy, whose family lived there during John F. Kennedy’s childhood. The original house no longer stands, but portions of its foundation remain within the basement of the residence now at 5040 Independence Avenue.

The current house is located on more than 1.2 acres near Wave Hill, with elevated views across the Hudson River Valley. Its three-story interior is organized around a triple-height atrium with sweeping curves influenced by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. The central space opens sight lines between the floors and introduces natural light throughout much of the home.

The current owner’s family has developed the residence in several stages since the 1990s, following the removal of the Kennedy-era house. More recent work has included both the main mansion and a separate cottage. Several interior areas remain unfinished, allowing a future owner to select their final materials and uses. The property can be delivered with a temporary certificate of occupancy.

The main residence includes nine bedrooms, seven full bathrooms and two powder rooms. A sunken living room opens to one of several terraces, which total 4,500 square feet. The floor plan also includes a formal dining room, library, media room, eat-in kitchen and morning terrace.

An additional 7,500-square-foot basement leaves room for further development. The property also has a garage with space for up to 10 vehicles.

A separate two-story cottage spans 2,000 square feet, with three bedrooms, two bathrooms and an attached two-car garage. The second residence could accommodate guests, staff or extended family while remaining apart from the main house.

The site’s connection to the Kennedy family dates to 1927, when Joseph and Rose Kennedy moved from Massachusetts to New York with their children. John F. Kennedy attended Riverdale Country School during the family’s two years in the neighborhood. The house they occupied had been built in 1907 and was later altered by subsequent owners before being removed sometime after 1991.

The surviving foundation walls are the principal physical link between the current mansion and the earlier Kennedy residence. The property is listed for $5.85 million by Dustin Crouse and Erin Boisson Aries of Douglas Elliman.
